There are 15 spots open for a Youth Works Mission trip in Martin, South Dakota.

Cost: $400- $425 (final price still to be determined)
- Fund raising will be done to help alleviate the cost
Time: Sunday, July 25th to Saturday, July 31st
Ages: Middle School & Senior High
Transportation: I hope to use vans to help keep cost low.

Deadline: A $60 non-refundable deposit is due Wednesday, January 6th
- I will accept payment early.

Here is some information about the trip.

The trip will 72 people from 4 different churches, us and groups from Leeroy, MN, Robinsdale, MN and Neenah, WI.

Below is information about the trip from the Youth Works Website.

Demographics

The town of Martin, South Dakota is the county seat of Bennett County. Bordered by the rugged Dakota Badlands to the north and the Sandhills of Nebraska to the south, Martin’s terrain is relatively flat. It is a wheat-growing and cattle-producing area with a population of about 1,500. The racial makeup of the city is primarily white (54 percent) and Native American (38 percent). While the Native Americans in Martin live off the reservation, they still retain important connections with the reservation community. The city’s position between two reservations has produced racial tensions between Martin residents and the Indian tribes, but the people of these communities are now making efforts to be more sensitive to one another. The area also is home to many low-income families. Nearly 30 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. You will be blessed as you work alongside the residents of this community to reach out to those most in need of your ministry.

About the Ministry

Participants serve in a variety of ways during a YouthWorks mission trip. Students may spend all week at one ministry or switch between ministries during the week. Ministries that your students may participate in are Kids Club and Work Projects. Kids Club is a hands-on program led by your youth offering high-energy games, crafts, skits, songs and interactive lessons all designed to help kids learn about Jesus. Whether we’re painting houses, performing minor home repair, cleaning up debris, volunteering in community gardens or other projects in the community, the projects students work on will serve as our way of blessing people in need. We cannot confirm until all groups arrive exactly what ministries your students will be a part of during the week. We ask that you come with a willing and flexible spirit!

Activities

Evening activities during a YouthWorks week are designed to give participants insight into the lives of local residents and the culture of the area. A list of evening/cultural activities we have done in the past include: go on a hike with a community member; go on a scavenger hunt; bowling; and attend a community Bar-B-Q. These are examples of what your group might partake in during your mission week. These examples are subject to change due to weather or availability. In case of change, suitable substitutes will be provided. We try to arrange for free evening activities, but from time to time, an additional cost may be required for an activity. Please plan to bring an additional $10 per person to cover any extra costs. We will confirm the details closer to your trip.

Ministry Week

Kids Club and Work Projects.

type='text'>Wednesday BBQ

Hey Everybody!

This is just a reminder about the BBQ this Wednesday at Oak Hill from 6:00 to 8:00. We'll have food, do some activities and wrap up any last minute questions anyone may have before we hit the road on Friday

EVERYONE is INVITED.

Youth, this is the last Mandatory night and Parents you are invited as well. Also, if you need to bring that extra brother or sister along too, that is cool with me.

One thing I ask is that you give me a heads up as to how many people will be attending. This will help me plan for food.

See Ya Wednesday.

Shirt Logos

Front

Back

Just incase you want to know.

YC’09 Leader Update
Some things you need to know about bringing a group to the convention

Registration and Fees

The final deadline for registration is May 31. The registration fee is $350. This covers room, meals, insurance, and convention costs.

Refunds: The balance less $100 deposit of a paid in full registration will be refunded if notice of a cancellation is given before May 31. After May 31, you may transfer the full amount to another person but there will be no refunds.

For those who might be staying off-site or who are arranging their own YMCA lodging apart from the YC’09 convention, there will be a $50 per day charge ($150 for whole convention) to attend the convention. This does not include meals. It does include insurance, program, and the $10/day YMCA charge. Please be sure to check in at the registration desk if you are in this category. You will be given a day pass that will allow you to participate in the sessions.

Check-in Procedures

The convention begins with check-in at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon.

If you arrive early you may explore the YMCA of the Rockies grounds, check out the coffee shop and the gift shop in the Administration Building. Or you may want to explore nearby town of Estes Park with all its fun shops and eating places. Wayne Stender will be leading games between 3:00 and 4:30 in the field across from the Administration Building.

When you arrive with your group, your leader (you or another chaperone) will come to the YC’09 registration office in the lobby of the WGR Auditorium (above the Cafeteria) while everyone else will chill with some impromptu recreation on the big field in front of the big Administrative Building. They can walk around and explore the campus if they want. Instructions and room assignments will be given to the leader. She/he will be given a tour and packets for each student. After that the leader will bring the rest of the group to their rooms and pass on the information that was received by the registration people and tour guide.

Each registrant will get a lanyard (to hang around their neck) with a name tag and key to their room. This lanyard and nametag is their pass to get into the dining hall and convention sessions. It will cost a person $10 for any lost keys.

The packet given to each registrant, along with the lanyard, name tag and key, will also include a “YC’09 Magalogue” which contains the convention program, instructions, Bible study questions, the schedule, and other very important information on the convention. There will also be promotional gifts and info in the packet.

Housing

The YMCA provides bedding and towels. The Trail Ridge Road (over 12,000 feet above sea level) is the highest paved road in America. You will need a National Park pass to get into the park.

Within a few miles of the YMCA is “Fun City” were you can rent go-carts, bumper cars, slide down a Super Slide, and jump on a Salto Trampolino (like a trampoline + bungee).

Seminars
We had an overwhelming positive response to the seminars hosted at YC07. Just as we did last time, we are planning on offering fresh seminars with dynamic, relevant speakers and presenters teaching on topics that relate to students and leaders alike.
• The Fight Against American Christianity – Brandon Pangman
• Making the Most of High School – Tony Rogness
• Timothy Project* – Greg Anderson
• God’s Yup and Nope – Matt Oxendale
• Help I’m a Church Kid – Michael Levang
• Time with Lost and Found
• Hip Hop, Culture, and Christianity – Dave Scherer AKA “Agape”
• Mean Girls – Liv Ronnevik
• Guys Only – Dean Rostad

*This seminar is a four-session Youth Ministry training seminar intended for college-age chaperones as well as students who have just graduated from high school.

Students do not need to sign up for seminars ahead of time, but if they want, they can begin thinking about which seminars they would like to attend.

You as a leader will have the opportunity to attend the seminars with the students.

Concerts
Shawn McDonald is a 28-year-old singer-songwriter from Seattle, WA. With his passion for diversity, he invites people to bridge the gaps that exist in today’s society. He has produced three CDs and travels across the county with his ministry.
Lost and Found is a Christian rock band from the United States. While happy to wear the title, Lost And Found never sought to be labeled as a "Christian band." The style of their music is called speedwood; a genre or subgenre of their own creation, also referred to as acoustic thrash. The band consists of two members. Michael D. Bridges plays guitar and George R. Baum plays piano, recorder, drums, and occasionally the slinky.

Role of the Leaders

• Model fun – Join in the fun and games. Playing along side your students will gain you more respect then you can image – plus, it’s a lot of fun!
• Model learning – We trust that you will grow in your faith at the convention too.
• Build Relationships – Trips like this are ideal for building relationships with the youth. A heart-to-heart discuss may be the thing they remember most from the convention.
• Lead Discussion – Help the students apply what they’ve learned as you discuss it in small group times following the evening sessions.
• Pass on Information – We will have 10 minute check-ins after lunch, during which you can connect with your students and brief them on the rest of the day.

We want to make this convention a fun experience not only for the youth, but for you as leaders too. We hope to equip you by giving you information, like this packet, so you can know what to expect when you arrive. During the convention, we will have leader meetings at 7:00 each morning to give you more details about the day.

Park Information

The YMCA of the Rockies is situated at over 8000 feet above sea level. The altitude does strange things to those who are not used to it. Altitude sickness can affect anyone, no matter what age or fitness level. You may notice shortness of breath and in some cases also experience fatigue, dizziness, headaches and nausea. In order to avoid altitude sickness, be sure to drink plenty of water. The sun burns much more quickly in higher altitudes. Therefore, be sure to use sunscreen and wear sunglasses.

There are usually wild animals (mostly elk) wandering through the camp. They look tame, but they are NOT. Please inform your youth that these animals are wild and should not be approached. Watch them from a distance. Also it is important to wear shoes when hiking (not sandals).

Packing List

A sample packing list:
• Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and other personal hygiene items
• Water bottle
• Watch
• Camera
• Sunglasses
• Flashlight
• Bible
• Tennis shoes
• Casual clothes (shorts, t-shirts, jeans, etc)
• Light jacket
• Pajamas
• Travel alarm
• Swimming suit (Modest)
• Pain / fever reliever
• Cold / flu / allergy medication

Drums!

The other night I was watching TV and I was fast-forwarding through the commercials. (Got to love the DVR.) Amidst the fast-forwarding I heard the statement, “Whoa!!! Look at all those Drums!!” Now if you have ever met our little boy Titus, you would know that this statement is quite often heard in our home. Titus is incredibly passionate about drums. He is continually tapping out beats with his two little hands to rhythms bouncing around in his head.

However, what was unique about this statement was that when I heard it, Titus wasn’t even awake. It was my wife, Stacy, whose uncontrollable exclamation drew my attention to the drums.

Titus’ passion has changed our lives. We now have an uncontrollable need to announce drums whenever we see them. This little incident started me thinking about how peoples’ passions have a great power of influence. In a few weeks (Aug. 7-14), the youth group will be heading out to Estes Park, CO, for the National Youth Convention. The theme this year is ILLUMINATE. When you have a passion, you can’t help but have it radiate from you and illuminate those around you. Titus could never hide his passion for drums and in turn, his passion is contagious to those around him. It is my prayer for our youth (and Oak Hill as a whole) that our passion for the Lord will illuminate - causing others to see it, be influenced by it and eternally changed because of it!

July

Thanks Elgar

Once again, it is that glorious time of year when soon, the bells of freedom ring from the mountain tops for every warm-blooded American child… and teacher! And as the graduation season approaches… I started wondering… What is with that Pomp and Circumstance song!? At every graduation across the country that song will be played. Don’t get me wrong… I like it, but why? And what does Pomp and Circumstance mean anyway? So I did a little research to find out. The British composer Edward Elgar wrote it in 1901. It actually has words! The title comes from a quote of Shakespeare’s Othello.
Farewell the neighing steed and the shrill trump,
The spirit-stirring drum, the ear-piercing fife,
The royal banner, and all quality,
Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war!

The song came to be associated with graduations when it was played shortly after Elgar received an honorary degree from Yale in 1905. Other colleges adopted it after that, and by the 1920’s it was a nationwide grad hit! Supposedly “The tune manages to sound triumphant, but with an underlying quality of nostalgia, making it perfectly suited to a commencement that marks the beginning of one stage of life, but the end of another.“

Of recent, we have had a few kids in our youth group experience this beginning and end. In a way we are getting Hans Brue back. He has just recently graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls. His plans for next year are to attend Normandale Community College. We will be losing Rebecca Leivestad. She will be graduating from Eden Prairie High School and plans on attending Bethel College next year. In a way we lost Rebecca Schubert last year. She skipped her senior year to get a jump on college. She just finished her first year at Bethel College. It has been so much fun watching these guys grow up. They have been such a blessing to our group. I ask that we as a church would pray for them - that they continue to serve the Lord with all their hearts wherever their paths take them. And to you, Hans and Rebeccas, let the pomp and circumstance commence!

Well Said Penn

This was our topic of discussion this week. Stacey King, a center for the Chicago Bulls once said, “I’ll never forget the night Michael Jordan and I combined to score 70 points.” Stick with me here. After Peter’s exquisite rebuttal to the Sanhedrin’s accusation of blasphemy their only response was, “This man has been with Jesus.” Now, what does that really mean, “to have been with Jesus?” I used to claim that one time I hung out with Michael Jordan on his Birthday. Have I been with Jordan? Sure, along with the 40,000 other fans there for the game. So I’ve been with Jordan but he doesn’t know me. The Sanhedrin could see how Peter knew Jesus and how it had changed him. What is even cooler though is that Jesus would say that he knew Peter.

Stacey King’s quote doesn’t share the whole story. That night they combined for 70 points, Jordan scored 69, King scored one. Yes, they did combine for 70 but I don’t think Jordan is going to remember King’s contribution. It is my hope that those around me say that I have been with Jesus. And I am confident that Jesus says he has been (and continues to be) with me.

May

Compassion International

A few years back, I (Stacy) accompanied some lovely young ladies from our youth group to a Girls of Grace conference. It was an awesome event. Compassion International was featured at the conference as the women of Point of Grace had recently returned from a trip in which they met the very children their families sponsor. Their stories and video were amazing. Compassion had a number of sponsor packets available at the conference and the girls in our group decided that they wanted to accept the invitation and pool their money together on a monthly basis to sponsor a child. They chose a young girl from India named Pooja. Our group continues to provide sponsorship to her - she is now 6 years old.

Currently, there is a group of people in India (Calcutta to be specific) visiting many of the Compassion centers located there, as well as meeting a number of the sponsored children. One of the women on the trip is the author of a blog that I enjoy reading (though I do not know her personally). She is linked on our blog under the "I'm a Sunday: Bring The Rain" icon. Another of the women is the daughter of Beth Moore. Anyway, all of the group is blogging about their experiences while in India. I have been following them quite closely and am finding their stories to be eye-opening, heart moving and even life changing. It is quite amazing to see what the $32 per month that our youth group sends for Pooja really does. If she is anything like the children being written about on these blogs, for Pooja, it seems, this small amount of money quite possibly means the difference between death and life - TRUE life.

For the past couple of days I have been thinking I should post about the trip and the blogs so that others might follow their journey and even possibly be led to sponsor a child with Compassion - but then life goes on and I neglect to take the time to write the post. However, I just finished reading the entries from today and I decided that I couldn't put it off any longer. I encourage you to click on the link below. It will take you to the Compassion India 2009 site. From there, you can link to the various blogs - just click on the pictures of the group participants on the right hand side. type='text'>Trip Itinerary

Here is the low down on the trip details so far. Nothing major will change from this so you can plan on this trip or something very similar to it.

We'll leave Friday the 7th sometime after supper. 6:00 p.m.ish. We'll drive through the night and get to Colorado and go white water rafting. I have talked to the ropes course we did last time and that is available.

From there we'll have some pizza and stay at a hotel in Fort Collins for the night. We'll be staying at a different hotel. This one is close to some outlet malls and includes a continental breakfast.

Sunday we'll head up to the convention at the YMCA of the Rockies. The convention will be packed with fun free time, great speakers, (I'm one of them) and music. They have a roller rink, pool, mini golf, hiking, the best Frisbee golf course I have ever done, ect. ect. ect.

We'll be there until the Wednesday the 12th. From there we are heading down to Denver to visit the US mint! Seriously. Yes, the Mint. Hey! It is the number 8 "Thing to do in Denver." And it appears to be free.

Then we are going to visit the best REI in the Nation and follow that up with a quick bite to eat and then catch a 6:30 Rockies Baseball game. I got us tickets in the "Rock Pile".

We'll hit the hay at our second hotel about an hour out of Denver in Georgetown. We'll get up bright and early to do some hiking. We're going to have to get up at around 6:00 am because we need to hit the trailhead by 7:00. My goal is to get a late checkout so we can get cleaned up after hiking and then pack up.

From there we have two options. There is a mall nearby where we'll be or we may head to this crazy restaurant where there are high divers! Yes, high divers in the restaurant.

Then, its back on the bus and we head home through the night. We'll get back late morning or early afternoon on Friday, August 14th.

There are links to the convention along the side and a promo video below.

YC'09!
